La Esmeralda: About Me

About Me

 Hi, I'm Amanda.
And if I could fit my life into 140 characters, I would've done it already.

But can anyone's life really fit into such small spaces?

If you want the basics, here they are:
  • I pretend I'm a hundred different people both onstage and behind fine print.
  • I grew up in a drought-ridden desert my entire life and have never seen colors change in the fall. What's a tree?
  • I enjoy really beautiful things (i.e. amethyst crystals, caramel soy latte art, vintage copies of the Hunchback of Notre Dame, simple poetry, a full moon on a cloudless night)

If you desire the nitty gritty, it's all here for your taking. Or simply click on another page that suits your current whim.

I was born into a comfortable and blessed household in Phoenix, Arizona. During my grade school years, my teachers had a huge impact on my relationship with books. As I became an advanced reader, I started writing a full-length young adult novel at the age of twelve. To be honest, at the time, I had no idea what I was doing! But I was always at a library, reading and writing. I desperately yearned to create a world that functioned as an adventurous escape.

As I wrote poems and short stories, I began gaining publications and scholarships before my sophomore year of high school. A year later, I self-published my first novel of three, Emerald Butterfly. The second, Sapphire Dragonfly, was finished but didn't reach publishing until later in my college years.

Which leads me to my studying for two years with the University of Arizona's School of Film, Theatre, and Television as an Acting Major, before realizing perhaps it wasn't all that I was looking for. Don't get me wrong, I fell in love with being able to embody characters on stage, even my own, but I needed something more flexible. Something that wouldn't squash my other many skills and talents. I took a gap year shortly after to take time to find out what I really wanted.

After working multiple retail, food, and acting jobs, plus a trip to Germany, I was back at square one to finish my schooling.

Now, as a student studying English and Creative Writing, I've turned to honing my skills and sharing openly with the world matters I believe should matter more.

I hope my blog, La Esmeralda, can shine light on matters of life in ways you may not have seen before. I hope it inspires you to step into all of who you are and all of who you were meant to be.
